According to the 2006 UN AIDS Epidemic Update an estimated 27,000 people
became affected with HIV in 2006 in the Caribbean. Overall about 250,000
persons in the region are living with HIV, with nearly 3/4 of this
number coming from Hispaniola: Dominican Republic and Haiti.
The report defines prevalence in the region as high: 1%–2% in
Barbados, Dominican Republic and Jamaica, and 2%–4% in the Bahamas,
Haiti and Trinidad and Tobago with Cuba being a notable exception
having a prevalence below 0.1%
AIDS claimed 19,000 lives in the Caribbean in 2006, making it one of the
leading causes of deaths among adults (15-44). Despite the high
prevalence rates, countries such as the Bahamas, Barbados,
Cuba and Jamaica are making inroads against their epidemics, with the
benefits of wider access to antiretroviral treatment. Levels in
Hispaniola remain stable but the report urges both countries to guard
against resurgent epidemics. Haiti in particular has signs that the
epidemic could take a turn for the worse.
