Mobile Telecommunications Expert Takes the Helm Ahead
of Nationwide Launch
PANAMA
CITY - PANAMA – Friday, November 21st, 2008 - Digicel, the
largest mobile operator in the Caribbean and recent entrant
to the Central American market, has today announced the
appointment of Raul Burgos as Chief Executive Officer of
Digicel Panama S.A. de C.V ahead of its imminent launch in
Panama. As CEO of Digicel Panama, Raul will be responsible
for successfully developing Digicel into a significant and
competitive player in the mobile telecommunications market.
This announcement comes on the heels of Digicel’s launch in
Honduras earlier this week with an investment of US$450
million to build the most modern GSM network, offering
unprecedented high quality service. Digicel is committed to
stimulating growth in both mobile markets by increasing
mobile penetration within the next five years to 90 per
cent. Panama has a population of more than 3.4 million
people with mobile penetration currently at just 71 percent.
Raul Burgos will leverage 20 years experience in the Central
American mobile community. His previous positions include
President of SunCom Wireless Puerto Rico and the US Virgin
Islands which he held from 1999 leading the company through
three company re-brands and two acquisitions. In addition,
Raul has held senior commercial posts with leading
telecommunication operations such as McCaw
Communications/Cellular One, SNET/Lynx Wireless, Motorola,
Nextel, Telecorp and AT&T Wireless Services.
"Digicel’s launch will at last herald true competition in
the Panamanian mobile market. The people of Panama can look
forward to a new level of service, value and choice under
Raul’s leadership. Digicel is excited about becoming a major
player in the Panamanian community,” said Donal
O'Shaughnessy, CEO of Digicel's Central American operations.
Speaking from Panama City today, newly appointed Digicel
Panama CEO, Raul Burgos, added, "We are very excited to be
approaching our launch in Panama. Digicel will lead the
revolution in mobile telecommunications in Panama with
customers enjoying first-class nationwide service, superior
customer care and real value for money. This
customer-centric approach has resulted in Digicel becoming
the number one operator in the Caribbean and the fastest
growing operator in El Salvador.”
A Puerto Rican national, Raul Burgos is a marketing graduate
from the Inter American University of San Juan, Puerto Rico,
and holds a Masters in Marketing and International Business
from the University of Akron in Ohio, USA.
