CEO Cable & Wireless Caribbean  Issues Message on Gustav and Hanna

Date Posted: September 04, 2008.

Over the past week the eyes of the region have been focused on Jamaica the Cayman Islands and the Turks and Caicos Islands as two severe weather systems, Hurricanes Gustav and Tropical Storm Hanna, affected these countries.

On behalf of Cable & Wireless Caribbean, I want to extend our sympathies to our customers in all three countries and all the other affected islands who were adversely affected and who might have lost members of their families or suffered any level of dislocation.

I can assure you that Cable & Wireless will be doing all that it can, as always, to assist the people of the affected countries to return to their normal way of life in the shortest possible time.

We are very pleased that from all reports our networks and services once again proved their resiliency and their reliability and performed admirably for our customers before, during and after the storms—whether it was to communicate locally or internationally or just to keep someone’s company during some very difficult hours.

Even at the very height of the storms, on average, some 95 percent of our customers had access through fixed lines, mobiles or Internet.

I must commend our team in all three locations for their excellent work in preparing for the storms and in responding so quickly afterwards to the outages we experienced.

I also want to commend our Regional Crisis Management Team for the very active role it played in coordinating all aspects of our preparedness and response, demonstrating in no uncertain terms the value of our One Caribbean concept.

Our teams in all three countries are now working around the clock to resolve all customer issues in the shortest possible time. It is our objective to have all outages corrected by mid-September.

However, in some cases where there is serious infrastructural damage which is preventing access to our crews, this may take a little longer.

We recognise that we are now in the most active part of the Hurricane Season, evidenced by the number of active severe weather systems now in the Atlantic, and we at Cable & Wireless continue to be vigilant and ask our customers to do the same.
