Date Posted: April 29, 2008.

A hairline fracture to the groin will force Chris Gayle to miss the entire Indian Premier League (IPL) season, but he hopes to be fit in time for the West Indies' first Test match against Australia, scheduled to start in Jamaica on Thursday 22, May. Speaking in an interview on Tuesday with IPL commentators, the Jamaican seemed in good spirit but expressed some disappointment at his unavailability for the ongoing series.

The West Indies captain was advised to have surgery after visiting a Kolkata private hospital and is awaiting permission from the West Indies board to go ahead with the procedure. The Kolkata Knight Riders, who presented a $800, 000  bid for for his contract, are yet to benefit from his services.

Australia, is scheduled to play a three Test,. five ODI series in the Caribbean between May and July. It has been confirmed that Chris Gayle, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Dwayne Bravo and Shivnarine Chanderpaul who are currently in India for the IPL,  will return to the West Indies four days before the first Test.  "Our arrangement with the IPL is that the players would be back for the (Digicel home) series." the West Indies Cricket Board CEO Dr Donald Peters told the Trinidad Express.
