BVI holds
forum over high cost of food and living
Date Posted: April 28, 2008.
ROAD TOWN, BVI: The high cost of living in the region and
the rising cost of food will be discussed at a major forum
in the British Virgin Islands on Monday evening.
The panel discussion on the BVI’s preparedness for the
current world economic downturn may hold practical
implications for households coping with rising prices for
food items and other basic commodities.
That’s the view of Lecturer in the Business and Computer
Studies Department at H. Lavity Stoutt Community College,
Dana Lewis-Ambrose.
Lewis-Ambrose says the discussions will be centred on
contingency planning amid the ongoing global economic
slowdown that has now become the focus of governments both
with the Caribbean and beyond.
Speaking in a recent GIS Radio Report, Lewis-Ambrose said
the panellists will also be addressing how the BVI economy
can be sustained despite world events that appear to suggest
no country will be spared the effects of the global
recession.
Also sharing the radio programme was Small Properties
Consultant to the BVI Tourist Board Zoe Walcott-McMillan.
She said the event has been organised to allow members of
the community to share their concerns and suggestions about
a problem that will have an impact on all residents in the
territory.
Monday's programme will among other things look at what is a
recession, how dependent in the BVI on the United States
economy, what should consumers expect over the next two
years, and what can the BVI do to ensure sustained economic
growth and development.
Host for the panel discussion will be Anthony Weeks,
popularly known for his talk show "Money Talk and More" on
WSTX Radio in the US Virgin Islands. The other panellists
will include members of HLSCC faculty and representatives
from the tourism, financial services and banking sectors and
government.
The event is to take place under the theme, Economic
Uncertainty: Preparing the BVI for the Expected and the
Unexpected.
