Stage Set for IPL in India and Stanford proposes $20 million game for Windies & England.

Date Posted: April 18, 2008.

The new Mecca of World Cricket, the Indian Premier League ( IPL) , opens an uncharted chapter on Friday April 18 as the the billion dollar tournament gets on the way. Three West Indians, Chris Gayle, R. Sarwan and S. Chanderpaul along with colleagues from most Test playing nations will commence the much anticipated 20/20 tournament. Gayle fetched a whopping $800,000 contract for his appearance in the richest cricket tournament ever, while his West Indian compatriots got $200,000.00 and $250,000 deals respectively. The IPL paid out contracts to more than 70 players ranging from 100,000 to just over $1 million, but easily surpassed their expenditure with billion-dollar TV-rights to broadcast the games. The tournament is scheduled to take place from April 18 to June 1st,  overlapping with the Australian tour of the West Indies which starts in Mid May.

Not to be easily upstaged, Allen Stanford, the billionaire financier of the million dollar Stanford 20/20 tournament in the Caribbean, held a meeting with England's Cricket Board Chairman Giles Clarke on Tuesday to propose joint ventures which could see Stanford having a role in any future English Premier League plus a match next year, which could be worth as much as $20million, against an All-stars West Indies XI.

"We did see Sir Allen - a date has not been fixed for when anything will be played, or what format it will take this year or going forward into the future," Clarke told BBC Radio Four's Today programme. "I think that match is very likely to take place. Sir Allen is doing a huge amount for cricket in the West Indies and we are keen to help things develop there."

England's  centrally contracted  cricket players are some of the only ones who are restricted from participating in the initial IPL matches as there is no window in the current international schedule for them to do so. As a result the ECB is eager to appease players who are keen to cash in on lucrative Twenty20 tournaments.
