A 41-year-old Trinidadian in Ontario, Canada has been
sentenced by Superior Court Justice Johanne
Morrisette, to five years in prison for aggravated sexual
assault and criminal negligence causing bodily harm for
having unprotected sex with a lady without disclosing his
HIV positive status. The sentence includes 34 months of time
already spent in custody, leaving another 26 to be served.
“Here we have a one-night stand that was lethal,” Morissette
said in handing down her sentence. She called it an “act of
extreme callousness and insensitivity that must be
deplored."
The lady, 30, went to an Ontario bar with Owen in April 2006
after being invited by the father of six, construction
worker. According to the St. Thomas Times Journal, "He
bought her a shooter, which she drank, and didn’t remember
anything else until she awoke in bed beside him. She
testified she asked him if they’d had sex. He said yes, but
answered no when asked if protection was used. Two months
later, the woman tested positive for HIV. "
“Sometimes it feels like he’s given me a death sentence.”
said the victim in an impact statement. |
