GROS ISLET, ST LUCIA – Persistent evening rain at the
Beausejour Cricket Ground on Tuesday, April 15, brought an
anti-climatic end to the Third Digicel One Day
International. Umpires Simon Taufel and Clyde Duncan were
forced to abandon the match shortly after 9:30pm local time,
forcing the capacity crowd to make their way home
disappointed that the West Indies could not chase down a
fighting Sri Lankan total.
At that stage the players were already off the field for an
hour and a half with the West Indies, in pursuit of Sri
Lanka’s 257 for 8, having reached 81 for 2 in 18.2 overs.
The West Indies, having won both the First and Second
Digicel ODIs in Trinidad and Tobago, sealed the three match
Digicel One Day Series 2-0.
Ramnaresh Sarwan (13*) and Marlon Samuels (3*) were at the
wicket after the loss of openers Sewnarine Chattergoon (46)
and Runako Morton (17).
Sri Lanka was powered by half centuries from opener Mahela
Udawatte and Tillakaratne Dilshan as they posted 257 for 8
from their 50 overs in the day/night encounter.
Udawatte hit five fours and one six from 122 deliveries in
getting to 73 while Dilshan faced 54 deliveries for his
aggressive 64. Dilshan hit three fours and one six.
There were also solid contributions of 41 and 40 from
Kaushalya Weeraratne (33 balls, 1×4, 2×6) and Chamara
Kapugedera (52 balls, 2×4)
Birthday boy Daren Powell (celebrating his 30th birthday)
picked up two wickets, including one from his very first
ball. It was the fourth time in his career he picked up a
first ball wicket at the Beausejour Cricket Ground. Powell
picked up two for 50 from his ten overs.
All rounder Dwayne Bravo (10-0-67-2) also picked up two
wickets and so too did captain Chris Gayle (10-0-41-2) with
his off spin. Gayle suffered what looked like a groin injury
while fielding and left the field. There were no updates on
his injury and it is not yet clear whether he will open the
innings when the West Indies chase.
If he does not it would be a serious blow to their chances
as top performer Shiv Chanderpaul was rested from the final
XI. Runako Morton replaced him and Fidel Edwards, the fast
bowler was also left out for Kieron Pollard, the hard
hitting all rounder.
Sri Lanka made one change to their final eleven, dropping
opener Upul Tharanga for fast bowler Thilan Mirando.
West Indies XI: Christopher Gayle (captain), Ramnaresh
Sarwan, Sewnarine Chattergoon, Marlon Samuels, Runako
Morton, Dwayne Bravo, Kieron Pollard, Darren Sammy, Denesh
Ramdin (wicketkeeper), Jerome Taylor, Daren Powell
