A paper addressing the issue of HIV and AIDS
in Jamaican prisons, written by Andrea Downer,
freelance writer for Panos Caribbean, has been
published under the name “No Sex Or Condoms
Here: HIV Prevention, Treatment and Care in
Jamaican Prisons”.
The paper looks at sexual activities in the prisons,
(denied by officials but admitted by inmates),
where the HIV prevalence rate is 3.3 %,
with a focus on HIV prevention, treatment and
care.
The impact of stigma on care and treatment
and the administration’s resistance to condom
distribution are among areas discussed.
Recommendations from UNAIDS to address the
issue are also contained.
These include dealing with overcrowding and violence, and
distribution of condoms in the prisons.
