THE EIGHTH CARICOM Social Security Games were recently held
at Kensington Oval under the auspices of the National
Insurance Scheme.
Ten countries participated in the games which began with a
street parade from St Leonard's Boys Secondary School to The
Oval.
After prayers from the Reverend Kevin Harris, the games were
formally opened by chairman of the National Insurance Board,
Jepter Ince.
Chairperson of the games' steering committee, Jennifer Hunte,
said the games had lived up to all expectations and to the
theme of CARICOM Unity, One Region, One People. She added
that despite a few hitches everything had gone to plan with
the preparations.
More than 350 athletes competed in a number of events,
including the wheelbarrow race for men and women,
three-legged race, fisherman's catch, sack race, as well as
a hilarious lime, spoon, needle and thread relay.
The countries involved also played a mixed five-a-side five-overs
cricket competition, as well as a dominoes competition. A
healthy lifestyle session was also a key component of the
games. Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, British Virgin
Islands, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, St Lucia, St Kitts and
Nevis, St Vincent and the Grenadines and Trinidad and
Tobago, and host country Barbados participated.
More than 500 visitors were on hand to participate and watch
the games.
The activities began with a meet and greet at Ocean Park,
followed by an excursion at Farley Hill National Park, and a
fete at Heritage Park. A cruise aboard the MV Harbour Master
brought the off-field activities to a conclusion.
The 2009 Games will be held in St Vincent and the
Grenadines.
