Submissions are invited for the design of a permanent
logo for the Caribbean Festival of Arts (CARIFESTA).
BACKGROUND
CARIFESTA was first held in 1972 to recognise and
celebrate the Region’s rich cultural heritage and its
artists. The festival was seen as an important innovation in
the regional cultural context and has made a significant
contribution to the development of regional identity. Since
its inception, CARIFESTA has been held nine times in seven
countries - the last festival being held in 2006 in Trinidad
and Tobago. In 2004, the Heads of Government of the
Caribbean Community agreed upon a new strategic thrust for
CARIFESTA which is reflected in its new Vision and Mission
Statements:
“To position CARIFESTA as a world-renowned, hallmark
festival of Caribbean cultural and artistic excellence that
generates economic benefits, unites the region and excites
all people” (Vision Statement).
“To stage a multi-disciplinary, roving mega festival that
develops Caribbean Arts and Culture” (Mission Statement).
Each host country has designed its own logo for the
festival. However, in the New Strategic Plan for CARIFESTA,
it has been recommended that a permanent logo be designed
for CARIFESTA to establish the festival’s brand and
facilitate merchandising and other licensing arrangements.
