Jamaican
tries to board plane with pipe bomb components.
Date Posted: April 02, 2008.
(Radio
Jamaica) A Jamaican man who was planning to board an Air
Jamaica flight at the Orlando International Airport was
detained and questioned by United States Federal Agents on
Tuesday afternoon.
He was held after components for pipe bombs and other
explosive materials were found in his luggage.
The suspect who has not been identified was scheduled to fly
on Air Jamaica Flight 80 to Montego Bay, St. James at 1:55
p.m. when Transportation Security Administration officers
spotted him acting suspiciously.
He was questioned and an officer from the Orlando Police
Department Bomb Squad searched his luggage, turning up
"suspicious items."
Law enforcement officials said among the materials found
were unassembled pipes with end caps, metal ball bearings
and other potentially explosive materials.
The area around check-in locations for Virgin Atlantic and
Air Jamaica at Orlando International Airport were evacuated
Tuesday afternoon.
Officers established a 300-foot perimeter around the checked
bag and the passenger was taken into custody.
Meanwhile, Air Jamaica's Executive Chairman, Shirley
Williams told the RJR News Center that investigations were
in the preliminary stage.
"At this time, all we know is that while the bags were being
processes and examined, there were components that were
somewhat suspicious in a bag belonging to one of the
passengers who was booked on one of our flights. At this
time do not wish to speculate except to say confirm that our
flight and passengers have been delayed pending the
investigations of the TSA," said Ms. Williams.
