GEORGETOWN,
GUYANA – The Digicel Scotiabank Cricket Experience
attracted hundreds of eager fans for three fun packed last
week days at the Merriman’s Mall in Georgetown, Guyana.
Dozens of persons walked away with fantastic prizes and some
even got bragging rights over star West Indies cricketers.
Elon Fernandes, an Under 19 player at the world famous
Georgetown Cricket Club challenged West Indies batsman and
vice captain Ramnaresh Sarwan in a throwing game and came
out trumps, winning for himself two mobile phones in the
process. Elon hit the stumps with regularity at a high speed
while Sarwan hit on fewer occasions and at a lesser speed.
Another lucky young lady, Tiffany Murray did not win any
prizes but on what was her sweet sixteen birthday she got a
chance to bowl to West Indies captain Chris Gayle and
batsman Sewnarine Chattergoon who also took photographs with
her and wished her well on her special day.
Gayle was particularly impressed with the event and said he
had fun as well.
“Well done to Digicel for putting on this, to see the joy on
the faces of the youngsters is great and I really enjoyed
being there interacting and having fun with them,” the West
Indies captain said.
The
Digicel Scotiabank Cricket Experience is an eleven game fun
packed zone where fans can walk up and participate, for
free, and hundreds of fans took the opportunity in the
launch in Guyana where the First Digicel Test Match was
played from March 22 to March 26.
In addition to the West Indies players visiting the camps
and interacting with fans, Guyanese champion race car driver
Mark Vieira and Soca artiste Malo were also in attendance as
was former world record holder for the most Test wickets,
Lance Gibbs. One highly entertaining segment was when the
three West Indies players, Gayle, Sarwan and Chattergoon
took on each other in the quiz. Fans gathered and had a
rollicking time as the players challenged each other on
their knowledge of West Indies cricket. Gayle prevailed and
his prize of a phone was presented to a lucky fan who
correctly answered a question posed by him.
Chattergoon, the young left handed batsman who is yet to
make his Test debut entertained the crowd by batting right
handed while challenging anyone to hit his stumps. There
were some serious contenders but none succeeded as
Chattergoon proved rather adept as a right hander.
The Digicel Scotiabank Cricket Experience will visit each of
the nine host countries for the Digicel Home Series 2008 in
the lead up to games. The next edition will be in Trinidad
before the second Digicel Test Match.
