Fears of more flooding along the East Coast of Guyana have
grown following the recent high sea swells in the region.
The waves which were caused by a low pressure system in
the northern-Atlantic, have affected several Caribbean
islands leading to flooding in low-lying coastal areas.
Along the already fragile defense network in the Demerara
region of Guyana, the waves have caused significant erosion
and residents fear the worst is yet to come. Residents in
some areas have so far had to deal with water as high as two
feet, flooding homes in a matter of minutes, often catching
them by surprise.
Shelters have already been opened to facilitate persons
displaced by flooding and the Guyanese Government is
spearheading emergency works in the area. |
