Panama to
host ACS 13th Ministerial Meeting |
January 17,
2008: Port of Spain, (January 15, 2008) – Foreign
Affairs Ministers and their representatives will meet in
Panama City, Republic of Panama from the 23rd -25th January
2008 for the 13th Ordinary Meeting of the Ministerial
Council of the Association of Caribbean States (ACS).
Participants of the Ministerial Meeting will include
representatives of the Member States, Associate Members,
Founding Observers, Observer Countries and Social Actors.
The Meeting will be preceded by a two-day Preparatory
session. Among other activities, delegates will review the
annual reports of the Secretary General, the Chairman of the
Ministerial Council and the Chairmen of the Special
Committees and Special Fund; examine the Association’s work
programme, budget, the organizational and administrative
structure; sign and ratify ACS legal instruments; and
approve Ministerial agreements. |

Other major
highlights of the Meeting will be the elections of the
fourth Secretary General, Directors at the Secretariat,
Executive Boards of the Special Committees and new
governmental authorities. The ACS Secretary General is
appointed in keeping with the principle of representation
based on rotation for a period of four years.
At a grand cultural event scheduled for Thursday 24th
January 2008, the ACS will also launch its publication
entitled “The Greater Caribbean: One Sea and Twelve Nobel
Prizes.” The same book will be presented at the
International Book Fair of Santo Domingo to be held in
April-May 2008, which will be dedicated to the Association.

The Association of Caribbean States is the organization for
consultation, cooperation and concerted action in trade,
transport, sustainable tourism and natural disasters in the
Greater Caribbean. Its Member States are Antigua & Barbuda,
The Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba,
Dominica, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Grenada,
Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Mexico, Jamaica,
Nicaragua, Panama, St. Kitts & Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent
& the Grenadines, Suriname, Trinidad & Tobago and Venezuela.
Its Associate Members are Aruba, France on behalf of French
Guiana, Guadeloupe, and Martinique, and the Netherlands
Antilles.
