Barbados
general election set for January 15 |
Posted December 23, 2007
By Robert Edison Sandiford
BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (Reuters): Prime Minister Owen
Arthur has set January 15 as the long anticipated date for
the next general election in Barbados.
"I have today advised his excellency the governor general to
dissolve Parliament in accordance [with] the Constitution of
Barbados for the purpose of enabling a general election for
representatives of the honourable House of Assembly to be
held," Arthur said in an address to the nation from
Government Headquarters late on Thursday.
He set December 31 as nomination day for the poll on the
tiny eastern Caribbean island, which became an independent
member of the British Commonwealth in 1966. |

Parties have been
gearing up for the election for months. But David Thompson,
leader of the Opposition Democratic Labour Party, called the
ballot hasty, saying it left little time for real debate.
"It's also abominable that the prime minister would've cut
right into what is really one of the most important events
for persons who practice the Christian faith [in our
island]," he said.
The president of the People's Empowerment Party, David
Commissiong, said his candidates were ready and waiting.
"Make no mistake about it: Barbados has gone badly off track
over the past 15 years, and there is much that now needs to
be done to get our country back on track," he said.
The last general election was held in 2003, when Arthur's
Barbados Labour Party won 23 of the 30 seats, returning him
to power for an unprecedented third term as prime minister.
