A
5.3 magnitude aftershock was felt in St. Lucia, Dominica and
St. Vincent on Wednesday at 8.11 a.m. It was located 15.11°N
61.05°W with a depth of 128 km.
This occurrence prompted the University of the West Indies
Seismic Research Unit to issue a warning, for residents in
the region to expect more, possibly stronger,
aftershocks in the wake of last week's 7.3 ( The UWI
rating differed to the 7.4 USGS rating) magnitude
earthquake.
"Please be advised that aftershock
sequences have a general pattern of behaviour and certain
magnitudes normally associated with earthquakes of the size
of the 29/11/07 event (magnitude 7.3) have not yet occurred
(e.g. we have not yet had an aftershock in the magnitude
range of 6.1-6.5). Scientists expect that these larger
aftershocks will probably occur at some time in the future.
As such, citizens should familiarize themselves with
earthquake safety tips and practice these regularly through
drills at home, school and work" a release from the
center said.
