2007: Crime figures reported in Jamaica, state that 12
persons were murdered across the country on Thursday,
bringing the gruesome total since Monday to 31 and for the
month of November to 151. The victims this month included 5
police officers, two of whom were killed within a 12-h
period yesterday. One of the officers was a 48 year-old
assistant commissioner, the highest ranking officer to be
killed so far on the island.
Approximately 1400, have been killed to-date for 2007 and
unless a drastic change occurs, the figures at the end of
the year will approach the 1600 homicides in 2005, a year
when Jamaica was termed the "murder capital of the world" by
the Caribbean Media Corporation.
The country's murder rate is currently 15% higher than it
was in 2006. |
