Jury unable to reach conclusive verdict on Woolmer's passing.

Bob Woolmer. The 11-member jury ended their deliberations on Wednesday, one week after the 26 day inquest ended. After sorting through the sometimes conflicting testimony of different experts and other evidence presented, the jury returned an open verdict late in the day. The open verdict means that the jury was unable to state with certainty how the former Pakistan coach died.

Bob Woolmer, died in his hotel room on the morning of March 18, one day after Pakistan suffered a remarkable loss to Ireland at the 2007 World Cup fixture at Sabina Park Jamaica. Dr. Ere Seshaiah, the Jamaican government pathologist who conducted the post mortem, declared that Woolmer was murdered but three independent pathologists all concluded later that Woolmer died due to natural causes.

Patrick Murphy, the Coroner presiding over the inquest,   had  listed several possible verdicts for the jury prior to their deliberations, based on the evidence and testimony presented. These included murder, manslaughter (voluntary and involuntary), death by natural causes, unlawful killing, suicide, accident or misadventure.  He had informed then that in the event of the jury failing to agree, the court would have accepted a majority verdict. During the proceedings they heard testimony from 57 witnesses and the reading of 12 statements from persons who did not appear at the inquest in person.
