ACS -
Success in Haiti |
November 27,
2007:
Port of Spain – On the wake of Tropical Storm Noel’s
passage through the Caribbean, the beautiful seaside resort
of Saint-Marc (unaffected), in the Republic of Haiti, played
host to the first ACS High-Level Conference on Disaster
Reduction from 14th to 16th November 2007.
This first-ever meeting on the subject for the countries of
the Greater Caribbean was attended by delegations from 21
ACS Members (including Ministers, high-ranking disaster
reduction specialists and experienced diplomats), over 16
international and regional organisations and members of
civil society. In all, over 120 people participated in the
Conference. |

The purpose of the
event was to exchange experiences, lessons learnt and best
practices in the areas of natural disaster risk reduction,
as well as determine areas of intra-regional co-operation in
view of the sheer number of initiatives in our region, the
scant resources and the heterogeneity of the different
actors.
The Conference was financed by the government of the
Republic of Haiti, the ACS, the UN International Strategy
for Disaster Reduction and the Government of the Republic of
Turkey. Technical and other support was also provided by
UNOCHA, UNISDR, IADB, UNECLAC, CEDERA, CEPREDENAC, IFRC,
PAHO and UNDP.
The Conference approved a Plan of Action to guide the work
of the ACS in this vital area of Greater Caribbean
cooperation, as well as a resolution with further
recommendations to be adopted by the Ministerial Council of
the Association.
