Hospital
shuts down briefly after a dangerous wanted man turns up
dead in their emergency room, riddled with bullets. |
November, 23, 2007: As crime continues to escalate in
the Bahamas, the capital Nassau was riveted on Thursday as a
35-year-old wanted man was gunned down on a residential
street in what appeared to be a drive-by shooting. He became
officially the 69th murder victim of the year.
The murdered man was identified by police as Samuel
McKenzie, a.k.a "Mouche". The victim was on bail awaiting
trial for murder. He is suspected of committing the first
murder of the year. Another unidentified man was critically
injured and remains hospitalised at The Princess Margaret
Hospital. According to Police, the incident occurred shortly
after 9am when shots were discharged from a green KIA jeep
traveling through the residential area, hitting the two
males. They were then transported to the hospital by private
vehicle and shortly upon arrival, the deceased succumbed to
his injuries. The other man’s condition was listed as
critical. The jeep was later discovered on fire directly
behind a Primary School on the island.
At the hospital further drama unfolded as the emergency room
had to be locked down for about an hour during the day as
heavily armed police maintained a strong presence. Word
circulated from some workers that another attempt may have
been made on the injured victim, but this was not
corroborated by officials.
Chief Administrator at the hospital Coralie Adderley said in
a press release on Thursday that the hospital had enhanced
security measures.
" We are pleased to advise that there has been, and
continues to be, a strong police presence at the hospital
and assure our clients and their relatives that we will
continue to work with the Royal Bahamas Police Force to
ensure the utmost safety and security. The public is asked
to support us as we seek to ensure the safety of our staff
and patients."
