Magistrate
jails rape victims mother - “I am making an example of
you..." |
November 23,
2007: This week a magistrate in St. Lucia, sentenced the
mother of a now 15-year-old rape victim, to one year in
prison for "willful neglect of a minor". The court heard
how the mother was informed by the victim's brother, that he
had seen their grandfather having sex with the young girl,
then 13.
When the magistrate asked the 38-year-old mother what she
had done about the situation, she replied with an utterly
shameful "I did nothing". In sentencing the mother the
judge said, “This kind of behavior from parents especially
mothers, will no longer be tolerated.” He went on, “I am
making an example of you. You had a duty to protect your
daughter and you did absolutely nothing.” The family,
comprising an older sister, three other little boys,
and the victim, were placed in foster care.
