Spain's king can't handle Indians in power, says Chavez

November 22, 2007:

LISBON (Reuters): Spain's King Juan Carlos told Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez to "shut up" because he cannot deal with indigenous Indians coming to power in Latin America, Chavez said on Tuesday.

King Juan Carlos sparked a diplomatic row earlier this month at a summit in Chile when he told Chavez to "shut up."

"The king lost his patience, he's human," Chavez said in comments aired on Portuguese television.

"I think he is not used to hearing so many truths together. Latin America is changing, there is an Indian president ... I am half Indian."

Chavez, who was in Paris on Tuesday where he met with French President Nicolas Sarkozy, said the rise of Indians to power, such as Bolivian President Evo Morales, had put descendents of people that struggled against colonial power Spain in power.

"We were left for many years, 300 years of genocide, so when the Indians rise up and we say the truth it doesn't go down well," Chavez said. "Because of that the king lost patience and exploded and was aggressive towards me."

Chavez has threatened to reconsider business and diplomatic ties with Spain over the spat and demanded that the king apologise to stop the incident from escalating.

The king told Chavez "Why don't you shut up?" after Chavez attacked former Spanish Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar as a fascist.
