Most victims of the live in slums on the Ozama river bank
who had returned to the area to recover their belongings
from the mud.
The infection is acquired through direct exposure to food
and soil contaminated with urine of rats, which have
proliferated lately.
Health Secretary Bautista Rojas toured Sunday several
hospitals and affected areas and announced a clean up drive
with support from the military after distributing 1.3
million doses of rat poison.
Rojas announced the arrival of an expert from the Pan
American Health Organization who visited Nicaragua in a
similar event but denied an epidemic since the victims are
below last year's 900.
