Leptospirosis outbreak in Santo Domingo

Nov 20, 2007:  Santo Domingo, (Prensa Latina) An outbreak of leptospirosis which official sources blame for 26 fatalities has forced President Leonel Fernandez to sound the alarm.

Official sources said hospitals in the capital have nearly 200 infected patients amid a non-stop stream of suspects after tropical storm Noel killed 87 people and left 46 missing.

Most victims of the live in slums on the Ozama river bank who had returned to the area to recover their belongings from the mud.

The infection is acquired through direct exposure to food and soil contaminated with urine of rats, which have proliferated lately.

Health Secretary Bautista Rojas toured Sunday several hospitals and affected areas and announced a clean up drive with support from the military after distributing 1.3 million doses of rat poison.

Rojas announced the arrival of an expert from the Pan American Health Organization who visited Nicaragua in a similar event but denied an epidemic since the victims are below last year's 900.
