November
15, 2007: United Nations Children's Fund's (UNICEF)
-Guyana, is expressing outrage and has issued a call
to action by all sectors of society. "We have to view
this as a call to action for all of us, everyone - the
government, the private sector, NGOs, civil society and
religious organisations, all citizens of Guyana - we have to
ensure appropriate actions, systems and strategies are in
place for our children to be protected. Not one more child
should have to face such horrendous circumstances at the
hands of inhuman perpetrators. Not one more parent should
have to mourn the premature passing of a child under such
gruesome circumstances, if we all heed a call to action to
help in providing an enabling society in which our children
can live and grow to reach their full potential," a
local representative said in a release on Monday.
The call to action was issued, following reports of
a number of primary school boys being sexually assaulted and
on the heels of the discovery on November 4th, of the badly
battered dead body of a 9-year-old child who went missing on
Friday, November 2nd. The child's body showed evidence of
sexual molestation. She had last been seen on Friday
afternoon making her way home from school sucking innocently
on a piece of sugar cane.
In Georgetown on Wednesday a prominent businessman
was charged with buggering four primary school boys, aged
7-8. All acts were believed to have been committed during
the first week of November at his place of business.
