Manning wins third term in office in Trinidad
November 7, 2007: The incumbent People’s National Movement (PNM) led by Patrick Manning won a comprehensive  majority in Monday's national election in Trinidad and Tobago. Of the 41 seats up for grabs, the PNM took 26, some 11 more than the United National Congress Alliance (UNC-A). The Congress of the People (COP) led by former UNC political leader Winston Dookeran failed to secure any seats and has already received advice from Economist Dr Dhanayshar Mahabir, lecturer at the University of the West Indies, to "fold now and quickly".

The 26 seats represents a three fifths majority, which will allow for some leeway in passing legislation. The party  however, fell just short of the 2/3 majority needed to deal with with special circumstances such as abolishing the Privy Council or the 3/4 majority necessary to change the Presidency of the country should they want to.

Political leader of the UNC Basdeo Panday was successful in defending his seat and has been tipped to return as the Leader of the Opposition in the Parliament. He blames  the COP, and its political leader Winston Dookeran for splitting the vote and costing UNC-A the election.

Incumbent Prime Minister Patrick Manning will be sworn in to serve his third time as the nation's second highest office holder at Woodford Square, Port of Spain on Wednesday.
