ACS Extends
Condolences to Caribbean Countries Afflicted by Tropical
Storm Noel |

(October 31, 2007) – The Secretary General of the
Association of Caribbean States (ACS) extends condolences to
the governments and people of the Caribbean territories
afflicted by Tropical Storm Noel.
The ACS SG, Dr. Rubén Silié wishes to express his sympathies
to the families of the more than one hundred casualties and
the many persons missing, injured and displaced by the
Tropical Storm in the Dominican Republic, Republic of Haiti,
The Bahamas, Jamaica and Cuba. |

Dr. Silié
reiterates that the Latin American and Caribbean region is
among the most vulnerable regions to natural hazards
worldwide. The various states of the Greater Caribbean
region should therefore see the need to combine their
efforts and cooperate to provide the best responses to such
phenomena.
In the face of the loss of life and severe devastation
caused by Tropical Storm Noel, there is an even greater
impetus to ensure that the ACS High-Level Conference on
Disaster Reduction takes place from 14-16 November in Saint
Marc, Haiti. Fortunately, the location for this very
important conference was not affected by the passing of
Tropical Storm Noel. |
