| November 1,
2007: At press time, there was one reported death as a
result of deadly Tropical Storm Noel passing through the
Bahamas. The Capital Nassau had over 12 hours of
persistent rain prior to the arrival of the storm but the
deluge predicted on Thursday afternoon did not materialize
as the storm shifted to the North East and spared the island
of New Providence anything more than moderate flooding in
low lying areas. The airport, schools and businesses in the
Capital are all expected to be reopened on Friday. Central
Bahamian islands such as Long Island, Exuma, Andros, Cat
Island, Eleuthera and Abaco all reportedly suffered more
serious flooding, with the only fatality at press time,
being a man who drowned in Exuma after being forced to leave
his vehicle on a flooded road.
On Thursday the toll in Hispaniola raised to over 100
dead in the aftermath of Noel's passage through that island.
According to the 8:00pm public advisory on Thursday, Noel
was upgraded to a Category 1 Hurricane as it moved away from
the Bahamas.
