| October 31,
2007: Propelled into action by a spate of armed
robberies and deadly shootings, the government of Antigua
and Barbuda has taken several initiatives through their law
enforcement officers to curb the dramatic escalation of
crime in the country for 2007.
The measures taken include randomly stopping and
searching of vehicles as well as having "extra dark"
tint from vehicles removed.
Throughout the region tint on windows is a necessary barrier
to the piercing sun, however, it is no secret that in many
of the islands it is misused to conceal the identities and
movements of criminals throughout communities.
Despite the inevitable privacy and convenience related
complaints, from some members of the public, officials have
held steadfastly to the new actions which according to them
have already yielded some success in tracking down
criminals.
According to the Antigua Sun "since these new
measures were put in place, the police have yielded a
combination of illegal contraband. The searches have
resulted in the discovery of an undisclosed amount of
illegal narcotics and weapons such as knives and scissors.
Items believed to be stolen jewellery were also found." |
