Jamaica's
murder rate soars past 2006 - 134 killed in September. |
October 30, 2007: The murder rate in Jamaica, not
unlike several other countries in the region, is up
significantly for 2007 when compared to the same period in
2006.
The 134 murders recorded in the month of September, pushed
the total to 151 more than the 951 murders reported for
January to September 2006.
As alarming as 134 murders in a single month are, this
was only the 3rd most deadly month in the country this year,
surpassed by 136 in July and 149 in January. For what its
worth, police say that as many as 65 of the September 07,
killings were done without motive.
The bright spot, if one is visible, is that the rate remains
lower than the 1,264 murders recorded over the same period
in 2005.
