Antigua murder rate soars past that recorded in 2006 -

October 26, 2007: A 37-year-old man was shot at least 11 times in the chest and abdomen in a public area in Antigua on Thursday, before masked gunmen made their getaway. This  was the 3rd gun related murder in as many days and it took the islands total to a record 17 for 2007.

According to the Antigua Sun, on Tuesday night a 51-year-old man was  shot in the head after his vehicle was run off the road and as many as five men opened fire on his windshield. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

On the same evening a 34-year-old man was shot dead in his store and a 33 year old was hospitalised with gun shot wounds to the face and thigh.

Adding to the mayhem of that Tuesday evening, it is reported that in other locations the Chief Fire Investigator and an Immigration Officer were separately held up by armed gunmen looking to steal their vehicles.

Police have not arrested anyone in relation to any of the matters.

On Thursday evening in a live broadcast, Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer told the nation that the army has been deployed to assist the police deal with the escalating crime.

Antigua registered 13 murders in 2006.
