2007: A 37-year-old man was shot at
least 11 times in the chest and abdomen in a public area in
Antigua on Thursday, before masked gunmen made their
getaway. This was the 3rd gun related murder in as
many days and it took the islands total to a record 17
for 2007.
According to the Antigua Sun, on
Tuesday night a 51-year-old man was shot in the head
after his vehicle was run off the road and as many as five
men opened fire on his windshield.
He was pronounced dead on the scene.
On the same evening a 34-year-old man was shot dead in his
store and a 33 year old was hospitalised
with gun shot wounds to the face and thigh.
Adding to the mayhem of that Tuesday
evening, it is reported that in other locations the Chief
Fire Investigator and an Immigration
Officer were separately held up by
armed gunmen looking to steal their vehicles.
Police have not arrested
anyone in relation to any of the matters.
On Thursday evening in a live
broadcast, Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer told the nation
that the army has been deployed to assist the police deal
with the escalating crime.
Antigua registered 13 murders in 2006. |
