| Grenada man
banned from beach |
October 25,
2007: A Grenada man pleaded guilty to sand mining in a a
magistrates court and as a consequence has been banned from
having access to any public beach in Grenada between the
hours of 6:00pm and 6:00am for a period of one year. In
addition the man must carry out 60 hours of community
service and his driver's license has been suspended for 3
months. Should he violate any of the actions mandated by the
sentence, he faces a 3 month jail sentence.
In Grenada, beach sand accounts for 100% of the fine
aggregate used for construction and illegal sand mining has
been sited as a major cause of beach degradation on
the island.
The island's Government has made it a priority to end the
practice. To achieve this the police have stepped up their
patrols public beaches. |
