  55% illiteracy rate in Haiti comes under threat

Port au Prince,  (Prensa Latina) Haitians are rushing to register for basic literacy teaching courses, which are being offered for the first time in this country, State Secretary for this activity Carol Joseph revealed in this capital.

Around 1,000 schools have been opened in the northern, southeastern, and western departments, just a month before the campaign begins, according to the Yo Si Puedo -Yes, I can- method, the name of which is Wi muen Kapab in creole language, and has been elaborated by experts from Cuba, a country that also contributes educational and technical means.

The official estimated at around 60,000 the people registered for the program, the objective of which is to teach basic literacy some three million people, aged from 14-45.

Besides eradicating illiteracy in an active sector of the population, the effort will generate some 100,000 jobs, according to official reports.

Joseph also said a census continues in the western southern, and northeastern areas, and in the Artibonite, the Nippes, and the grand Ans, and basic literacy teaching is yet to be started in the northeastern area and the Central Plain.
