October 19,
2007: A recent study in Barbados has found that the
desire for "Bling" and flagrant possessions are the two main
factors that influence sexual activity among secondary and
tertiary school students.
This was revealed by the
National HIV/AIDS Commission,
last week from the three-year study that examined the theme
risk perception and sexual practices among teenagers. The
study showed that of the participants between the ages of 15
and 18, 85 per cent were sexually active.
A 2003/2004 survey of 10 - 18 year olds also published by
the same commission revealed that the mother was present in
86.1% of the households of respondents but sadly the
father was present in only 40.9%. |
