Mass Haitian deportation from the Dominican Republic

Santo Domingo, October 15, 2007:   At least 10,000 undocumented Haitians have been deported from the Dominican Republic so far this year, according to a note from Dominican authorities, which anticipates their attempted return sooner or later.

Those caught trying to enter the country are sent back to their places of origin, says the note, released amid protests at the presence of Haitians in sectors of the national economy.

The announcement coincides with complaints about an increasing number of Haitians employed in sectors such as public transportation, private security services and tourism, so far reserved for Dominicans.

Haitians are employed as cheap labor without rights in Dominican construction, currently in a boom with injections of money from drug traffic, according to sources who wish to remain anonymous.
