October 11, 2007: A low pressure system hovering over the western Caribbean has been
responsible for persistent rain over the island of Jamaica since Sunday. A Flash
flood warning issued by the island's Meteorological Service on Monday, has been
extended into Thursday as the unstable weather conditions continue to prevail.
Reports are emerging of severe flooding in low lying areas predominantly in
Eastern and Central Jamaica, with at least one confirmed landslide, all making
several roads impassible. In some flood-prone areas, persons are being evacuated
from their homes and taken to shelters as the rain continues to fall.
According to the National Hurricane center's analysis of the weather pattern
at 5:30pm on Wednesday Oct 10. the immediate forecast is not too bright.
"A LARGE BUT DISORGANIZED AREA OF DISTURBED WEATHER...ASSOCIATED WITH A BROAD
TROUGH OF LOW PRESSURE...EXTENDS FROM THE NORTHWESTERN CARIBBEAN SEA
NORTHEASTWARD ACROSS CUBA...JAMAICA...HISPANIOLA...AND PORTIONS OF THE BAHAMAS.
WHILE SIGNIFICANT DEVELOPMENT OF THIS SYSTEM IS NOT ANTICIPATED...IT COULD
PRODUCE LOCALLY HEAVY RAINFALL ACROSS PORTIONS THESE AREAS DURING THE NEXT
COUPLE OF DAYS".
