| October 4, 2007:
On Tuesday October 3, striking Air Traffic Control (ATC)
personnel brought operations at the V. C. Bird Int’l Airport
to a standstill by 1pm, as two consecutive shifts called in
sick. The workers represented by The Guild of Antigua &
Barbuda Air Traffic Controllers (GABATCO) have apparently
been expressing dissatisfaction over stalled negotiations
with the government.
The Antigua Barbuda Airport Authority (ABAA) were able to
reopen the airport at 6pm with the use of management and
retired personnel still qualified to operate the tower.
Through their actions a number of domestic carriers were
able to reroute passengers to neighbouring islands, as
Antigua serves as a major hub for travel between the Leeward
and Windward Islands. |
