It's
heartbreaking to lose - Sarwan |
September 12,
2007: JOHANNESBURG, South Africa - West Indies captain
Ramnaresh Sarwan and Man-of-the-Match Chris Gayle spoke with
the media after the opening game of the ICC World Twenty20
Championship on Tuesday September 11 2007. Following are
excerpts from their responses to various issues raised with
them by journalists.
RAMNARESH SARWAN
On whether it was especially difficult to lose the game
after posting 205:
Although I thought we should have gotten 15 to 20 more to
lose with that total is really heartbreaking. It shows you
that when you don't field well and when you don't bowl well
it tends to cost you. We bowled quite a few wides and
dropped a few catches and it cost us.
On whether one area in particular was a letdown which let
the game slide away:
I think it is more or less the fielding that cost us. We
dropped Herschelle (Gibbs) and then we dropped (Justin) Kemp
and in that situation both of them are very clean strikers
of the ball. I don't think you can blame the batters for
their effort. I thought we should have gotten 15 to 20 more
but I thought it was the fielding that let us down.
On whether he thought that chasing 205 was virtually
impossible for South Africa:
Not at all, we played here a few years ago and we scored 310
(in a One Day International) and they scored that with
probably 2 or 3 overs to spare. We were fully aware of the
conditions here and when the ball gets wet it tends to skid
through to the bat and it becomes easier to bat.
On whether 'crash, bang whallop' should be the formula
for Twenty20 cricket:
There is a plan just like a fifty over game and it was
clear, it was shown today. Herschelle (Gibbs) and Chris
(Gayle) did not start off very fast. They paced their
innings well and played to a plan and it shows that if you
play to a plan you can play proper cricket and win games.
On Chris Gayle's record breaking innings:
It was unbelievable to be honest. To see someone strike the
ball the way he was striking the ball it was amazing. Having
said that he hasn't been practising that much during the net
sessions because he has been injured so I would like to see
him get some practice in and we might see something else.
On the exorbitant number of wides bowled:
It's the wides and the dropped catches that really cost us.
It is a matter of us going back to the drawing board now and
doing a lot of fielding and some bowling in the nets and
hopefully we'll be able to get it right for the next game.
On whether the team batting last will have a distinct
advantage in the tournament:
It is always good to chase here. If we had won the toss we
would have bowled first as well. It depends on the
conditions and whether you can get wickets early. It is not
a situation of whether it is better to chase or bat first,
it all depends on the conditions.
On whether the West Indies has enough depth in batting to
make up for Chris Gayle in the event he misses the next game
due to the injury he picked up after being hit by Shaun
Pollock:
Of course we have depth but Chris has just assured me that
he is going to play the next game so I don't think I have
anything much to worry about. |

CHRIS GAYLE
On having lost the match after an exceptional batting
performance:
I thought we put up a pretty decent total of 205 but having
said that I thought the South Africans really came hard at
us and in the end they came out victorious but we still have
to look back and look at where we went wrong and go back to
the drawing board. We have Bangladesh coming up so we have
to take that into consideration.
On the numerous wides bowled:
That's a concern, the batting was good even though we should
have capitalized on that start some more and try and get a
few more runs. I thought (Daren) Powell started well but the
extras came into play and that cramp us a bit and we fell
short on a few chances as well. We still have a lot of work
to do, we are still in this tournament and we can still win
this tournament.
On whether the noisy crowd played against the West
Indies:
It was very exciting but the guys have been through this
situation before so we are not going to find excuses at all
it is to come out there and try and put everything together
and try and put it right. Powell and Ravi (Rampaul) have
been bowling well for us and hopefully they can get it right
in the next game and start to build from there. It's a
Twenty20 tournament and it's going to be exciting, the guys
are going to come at us hard and you have to try and be more
positive.
On his amazing knock:
It's been a while, I haven't played any cricket at all since
I left England. This is actually the second time picking up
a bat on this tour so it's good to get a hundred on the
Wanderers wicket. It's my second hundred here, it's a good
wicket to bat on. It goes to show how well Gibbs batted on
that sort of surface. Hopefully I can continue with this
same form and capitalize on the situation and try and go on
some more until the end (of the innings). |
