Bruce Golding, leader of the Jamaica Labour Party will be
sworn in as the country's eighth prime minister next Tuesday
September 11 according to information coming out of Jamaica.
The official tally of ballots released on Thursday gave
Golding's JLP 33 seats, 6 more than the incumbent People
National Party (PNP).
With victory, the JLP ended the 18 year rule of the PNP and
ended the brief stint of Mrs. Portia Simpson Miller as
Jamaica's first female Prime Minister. In March 2006, she
had taken over the island's top position after the
resignation of then PNP leader and Prime Minister P.J.
Patterson.
The hotly contested nature of the General Elections was
evident in some of the results released on Thursday.
East Hanover: JLP's Barrington Gray over
the People's National Party's (PNP) D.K. Duncan, by 9
votes,
South East St. Mary: JLP's Tarn Peralto
over PNP's Harry Douglas by 32 votes
Western Hanover: PNP's Western Ian
Hayles over the JLP's Donovan Hamilton by more
than 100 votes.
Meanwhile police in Jamaica confirmed on Thursday that
Director of Elections, Danville Walker, the person credited
with playing a major role in cleaning up of Jamaica's
electoral system, has been receiving death threats in the
aftermath of Monday's poll. |
