Realistic about World 20/20 Championship |
JOHANNESBURG,
South Africa Sept 5, 2007: –
West Indies captain Ramnaresh Sarwan sees 50 over world
champions Australia and hosts South Africa as the favourites
to take the ICC World Twenty20 Championship but believes
that there is a greater chance for any team to out muscle
and out-perform the favourites in the exciting and super
short form of the game.
Sarwan made the remarks while speaking with media in
Johannesburg shortly after the team arrived in South Africa
on Tuesday morning. Following are excerpts from his
responses to various issues raised with him by journalists.
On which teams are likely to be the favourites going into
the tournament:
I think Australia and South Africa. We know how well the
Australians play in any form of the game and also that South
Africa is very difficult to beat at home. That's not to
discount ourselves, we are very capable but Twenty20 is an
open game, there will be favourites but any team can prevail
on the day which is what most people have been saying in 50
over cricket for some time but it is now more true in 20
over cricket.
On whether Twenty20 cricket is tailor made for the West
Indian style:
The sort of players we have, we can be very attacking and
flamboyant so it kind of gives us a better opportunity.
People say we are better in the shorter version of the game
and I agree with that assessment to an extent but I think it
(Twenty20 cricket) also calls for skill and execution. |

On whether
having played in the Stanford 20/20 Tournament will benefit
the players in the ICC Twenty20 Championship:
Yes, absolutely, we also had a couple of games in England
earlier this summer and we played really well and we are
looking to take that same sort of form in this tournament. I
think Chris (Gayle) really led the team well in England. The
guys supported him and I think it is a matter of us taking
the form we showed in England and bringing it across here.
On his own fitness and form after injury:
I've been doing a lot of batting in the nets and a lot of
gym work so I'm pretty happy with the way my injury has come
along. I'm pleased and confident with the way I'm hitting
the ball when I bat in the nets.
The West Indies play two warm up games on September 8th and
9th at Benoni against Kenya and New Zealand respectively.
West Indies and South Africa also square off in the opening
game on September 11th at Wanderers.
