September 4, 2007: The election of Jamaica's first female Prime Minister was not be as her
incumbent People's National Party lost by a narrow margin to the Jamaica Labour
Party, led by, second generation career politician, Bruce Golding. Initial
results indicated a 31 - 29 seat count in favour of the JLP but on Tuesday the
numbers were readjusted to a 32-28 margin, giving the JLP a little more breathing
room.
With some constituencies decided by less than a 3% margin, the PNP leader Mrs.
Portia Simpson Miller refused to concede defeat. Despite pronouncements by
authority figures in the electoral system that the election was clean, she
complained to party supporters that it was illegally snatched from her and on
Monday night, served notice that the party will be challenging some of the
results in court.
Meanwhile as many as 17 persons were reportedly murdered between Friday and
Monday in the country and the Jamaica Gleaner published an account of
Terror
that spread through several regions
after results were released. |
