JLP led by career politician, wins slim majority in Jamaica.

September 4, 2007: The election of Jamaica's first female Prime Minister was not be as her incumbent People's National Party lost by a narrow margin to the Jamaica Labour Party, led by, second generation career politician, Bruce Golding. Initial results indicated a 31 - 29 seat count in favour of the JLP but on Tuesday the numbers were readjusted to a 32-28 margin, giving the JLP a little more breathing room.

With some constituencies decided by less than a 3% margin, the PNP leader Mrs. Portia Simpson Miller refused to concede defeat. Despite pronouncements by authority figures in the electoral system that the election was clean, she complained to party supporters that it was illegally snatched from her and on Monday night, served notice that the party will be challenging some of the results in court.

Meanwhile as many as 17 persons were reportedly murdered between Friday and Monday in the country and the Jamaica Gleaner published an account of Terror that spread through several regions after results were released.

The close results in Jamaica were reminiscent of election results seen in the Bahamas in May 2007 in which the Opposition Free National Movement snatched victory with only 23 of 41 available seats.
