
September 2, 2007: Hurricane Felix became the second
category 5 storm of the season as it rapidly intensified in
the Caribbean Sea on Sunday. At 8:00pm on Sunday the
National Hurricane Center in Miami Florida, reported that:
"FELIX IS MOVING TOWARD THE WEST-NORTHWEST NEAR 18 MPH...30 KM/HR...
AND THIS GENERAL MOTION IS EXPECTED TO CONTINUE FOR THE NEXT 24
HOURS.
MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS ARE NEAR 165 MPH...270 KM/HR...WITH HIGHER
GUSTS. FELIX IS A CATEGORY FIVE HURRICANE ON THE SAFFIR-SIMPSON
SCALE. SOME FLUCTUATIONS IN INTENSITY ARE TO BE EXPECTED OVER THE
NEXT 24 HOURS."
The major hurricane is currently in open water and at
least 2 days away from possible direct impact on central
America.
As a tropical storm that developed just east of the
Windward Islands, Felix was responsible for
significant flooding and damage in several islands as
