August 29, 2007: Police in Guyana say that three of the 18 men who
escaped from the New Amsterdam prison in Berbice on Saturday
were shot dead on Monday after they opened fire on police
who had cornered them in an abandoned building. Another six
were recaptured leaving six still on the lam. Three of the
original 18 were recaptured within hours of the prison
break.
Three of the 18 men who stormed out of the New Amsterdam
prison on Saturday were shot dead yesterday in what the
police said were armed confrontations and another six
recaptured, leaving six still on the run.
Another three had been recaptured hours after the break-out
occurred on Saturday. Dead are Arvendra Deonarine, Carlos
King and Neville Williams.
At least one of the killed escapees was being held for
murder.
Police say the men opened fire as officers closed in on
an abandoned house where they were hiding out. The officers
returned fire, killing three and injuring a fourth who is hospitalised under guard. |
