2007: World record holder, Jamaica's Asafa Powell(24)
finished a disappointing third in the 100 metres final on
day two of the 11th IAAF World Championships at the Nagai
Stadium in Osaka Japan on Sunday.
The race was won by American Tyson Gay, in 9.85 seconds
0.01 seconds shy of his career best. Derrick Atkins of
The Bahamas, who clocked 9.91 seconds claimed silver.
Powell was third in 9.96 seconds, and even though he is
co-holder of the world record at 9.77, admitted he ran
scared.
"I felt him (Gay) coming on and started to panic and that
just slowed me down as I lost concentration," Powell told
reporters after the race.
"I was ready, but I stumbled from the blocks... I was
leading until the end and I started to tighten-up and lost
the race from there as Tyson ran past me," he said.
It was a first gold for Gay at a major international
championship. |
