State of
emergency lifted and new election date announced in Jamaica. |
Professor Kenneth
Hall, Governor General of Jamaica, issued an official
proclamation on Friday confirming that General Elections
postponed due to Hurricane Dean from August 27 will be now
held on September 3rd.
Also on Friday Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller
advised Governor General Kenneth Hall to issue a
proclamation terminating the State of Public emergency
which was imposed on the island
Sunday August 19, in the wake of Hurricane Dean. She said
that the decision was made after the Heads of the Jamaica
Security Forces assured her that there would be special
security measures in effect in areas that still do not have
electricity. Since making the decision the Prime Minister
had come under much pressure from several organisations and
opposition groups for the State of Public Emergency to be
lifted.
