Leptospirosis and Dengue fever may be on the increase in Trinidad

A Health Ministry official in Trinidad has warned the public to brace for an increase in a the number of reported cases of  leptospirosis  and dengue fever during the last quarter of 2007. The Trinidad Express has reported that the official, speaking anonymously, warned that since 2006 they have observed an upswing in both diseases which are mainly spread by rats and mosquitoes.

According to the Express:

"During the last two months there were 15 suspected cases of leptospirosis at the San Fernando General Hospital, an official at the institution said.

Up to yesterday four people were being treated at the hospital for the disease. One who was admitted on Tuesday is listed as a confirmed case.

Over the past two years 11 deaths were caused by leptospirosis with 25 confirmed cases while the number of cases of suspected dengue was more than 100.

Health Minister John Rahael said yesterday that the Ministry has the facilities to deal with any outbreak of these diseases
