Jamaica prepares for August 7 Election.

July 26, 2007: The Jamaican Parliament has been dissolved by Governor General Kenneth Hall at the request of  Prime Minister Portia Simpson  in accordance with constitutional provisions.

The dissolution makes way for the 2007 General Election slated for August 7th.

Portia Simpson, Jamaica's first female Prime Minister, ascended to the position after former Prime Minister P.J. Patterson stepped into retirement in March 2007. Simpson is seeking a mandate from the people for her first campaign as leader of the ruling People's National Party (PNP). If successful it will be an unprecedented 5th consecutive term in office for the ruling party and the first direct election of  a female Prime Minister by the populous.

The Opposition,  Jamaica Labour Party (JLP), led by Bruce Golding is campaigning hard in an attempt to unseat the government, despite having to scrambling for cover when shots were fired at their motorcade earlier this month. Both parties are having to campaign amidst increasing acts of political violence, an unfortunate part of elections in the island. In 1980 as many as 900 persons were killed in Election related violence. This weekend, the  Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) soldiers is expected throw a security blanket around polling stations, counting centres and nomination centres islandwide, in preparation for Election Day.

Observers believe this could be one of Jamaica's closest elections ever.
