July 26, 2007: The Jamaican Parliament has
been dissolved by Governor General Kenneth Hall at the
request of Prime Minister Portia Simpson in
accordance with constitutional provisions.
The dissolution makes way for the 2007 General Election
slated for August 7th.
Portia Simpson, Jamaica's first female
Prime Minister, ascended to the position after
former Prime Minister P.J. Patterson stepped into
retirement in March 2007. Simpson
is seeking a mandate from the people for her first campaign
as leader of the ruling People's National Party
(PNP). If successful it will be an unprecedented 5th
consecutive term in office for the ruling party and the
first direct election of a female Prime
Minister by the populous. |
