GIVES MORE ASSISTANCE TO SPORTING FACILITIES in St.
Kitts/Nevis Federation |
Basseterre, St. Kitts (July 06, 2007): The Republic
of China (Taiwan) continues to contribute to the development
of the sporting infrastructure in St. Kitts and Nevis.
On Wednesday, Taiwanese Resident Ambassador His Excellency
John Liu presented two cheques to upgrade the sporting
complexes at St. Peters and Verchilds. The combined value of
the cheques is approximately US $440,000.00.
Work at the St. Peters facility will include the
construction of a pavilion, while the grounds at Verchilds
will be fenced. The cheques were accepted by the respective
Parliamentary Representatives for the area, at a brief
ceremony at the Taiwanese Embassy on Wednesday.
The donations “demonstrate that as a great friend of St.
Kitts and Nevis, my government truly supports your national
development,” said Ambassador Liu, while listing previous
contributions to the sporting infrastructure. He added that
the upgrades will promote greater use of the facilities thus
promoting greater community spirit and pride.
“My government is pleased to be your development partner,”
Ambassador Liu stressed. “I’m sure that through our joint
efforts, your economy and people’s well being will be
substantially improved in the years ahead.”
Parliamentary Representative for Constituency #4 Hon. Rupert
Herbert said the fencing of the field represents the
continued fulfillment of promises made to community
residents. He noted that the Government and People of the
Republic of China (Taiwan) are excellent friends of the
twin-island Federation because they continuously lend
support where it is desperately needed.
Minister Herbert added that the fencing of the Verchilds
facility will offer greater security and safety for users
while offering an avenue for young persons to partake in
positive activities.
Minister Cedric Liburd, who holds the seat for Constituency
#8 in Parliament, thanked Taiwan for supporting Phase 1 of
the St. Peters project which will see the construction of a
pavilion. The fencing of the ground will be addressed during
Phase 2 of the project. Ambassador Liu indicated that his
government will also fund this phase.
