Antiguan mother suffers sad loss of
island's first recorded conjoined twins. |

July 8, 2007: Just under
three full days of life is all that Antigua's first recorded
conjoined twins managed to have. The two girls with a
combined weight of 4.95 kilos or 10 pounds and 13 ounces,
joined at the chest were born on the morning of Tuesday July
3rd. They passed away at 4:45pm on Thursday July 5th
after spending the previous night in the Intensive Care Unit
of the Holberton Hospital in Antigua;. The two had been
transferred to the ICU because their lungs were not
producing the oxygen level expected at their stage
(Levels at 60% , expected level 90%).
The girls were delivered from their 32-year old mother on
Tuesday, by C-Section. She was unaware that she was
having twins, but was fully accepting of their conjoined
nature declaring it to be the wish of God. These were the
seventh and eighth children to be born to the mother and her
long time boyfriend. |

Doctors discovered
the twins were conjoined during delivery when after seeing
two sets of feet they failed to in a attempt to pull
one of the babies out before the other. The Doctors
had initially declared the twins healthy and had confirmed
that the two had two separate heartbeats and were hoping
that they had no fused organs. Further examination had
revealed that the girls had two separate bladders and two
separate gastrointestinal (GI) tracts that control digestion
and excretion but were believed to be sharing part of a
liver. More tests were scheduled for later in the day on
Thursday.
Conjoined twins are born together at birth. This happens
where the zygote of identical twins fails to completely
separate.
