Prime Minister of Dominica, Roosevelt Skerritt (L) and OECS
Director General,
Dr Len Ishmael
Skerrit, who took over the chairmanship of the sub-regional
grouping at the 45th Meeting of the Authority in Grenada
last month, made the remark on the occasion of the 26th
Anniversary of the founding of the OECS.
In the message delivered on June 18, 2007, on the 26th
anniversary of the signing of the treaty of Basseterre,
Skerrit pointed to the numerous accomplishments of the
organization.
“Citizens of our Member States can travel easier using valid
picture identification. Our new OECS Flag and OECS Song are
symbols of the OECS model of integration. Several of our
Member States were part of the recent historic staging of
the third biggest international sporting event- the ICC
Cricket World Cup,” Skerrit stated.
Skerrit highlighted the success of the Export Development
Unit in helping the private sector to acquire and sustain
world class manufacturing standards. The OECS as a grouping
is continuing to assert itself in the world in a number of
ways, notably playing a vital role in the WTO trade
negotiations in Geneva with the Group of Small and
Vulnerable Economies, the OECS Chairman noted.
The Prime Minister also said that “respected international
bodies such as the World Bank and the Commonwealth
Secretariat have held up the achievements of the OECS as a
model that other parts of the developing world could do well
to emulate”. |

Skerrit also highlighted the success of the institutions of
the OECS. These include: the OECS Secretariat based in St
Lucia; the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB)
headquartered in St Kitts, and the Eastern Caribbean Civil
Aviation Authority based in Antigua.
Regional entities and arrangements such as the Eastern
Caribbean Telecommunications Authority, the Pharmaceutical
Procurement Service, the AIDS Project, our Overseas
Representational Missions all continue to serve us well and
to reinforce our sense of common identity, Prime Minister
Skerrit said.
It was on June 18th 1981 that the Heads of Government or
their representatives from the participating Eastern
Caribbean territories gathered in the St. Kitts/Nevis
capital to sign the Treaty of Basseterre which established
the OECS.
The OECS member countries are Antigua/Barbuda, Dominica,
Grenada, Montserrat, St Kitts/Nevis, St Lucia, St Vincent
and the Grenadines, Anguilla and the British Virgin Islands.
